Training of Officials

Bet at 5dimes

I think all MMA officials need a certain amount of a martial arts background and especially some ground fighting training, so that they can better understand whats going on. Perfect example is Herb Dean, who is 2-3 as a fighter and that fighting background really helped in his calling of the Tim Slyvia vs. Frank Mir fight. He saw the arm break and was looking for it, and because of that he saved Tim's arm from being further damaged. That was impeccable officiating.

Bad example of officiating:
I hate to pick on Yves Lavigne but he has shown more than once the propensity of either stopping a fight to early or too late, its like he just can't get it right. I point to Mike Brown vs. Pete Sell at UFC 96, he looked like he stopped it then he pulled back the trigger, and let the fight continue unnecessarily. Recently at UFC 118 he should have waved off the fight the Marcus Davis- Nate Diaz fight much sooner when that choke was deeply sunk in.

I as a fight fan would rather have a fight stopped early, than stopped too late and have a fighter take an unnecessary amount of damage.

Just saying.

Learn the Game.
